Há 97 anos que a prestigiada revista norte-americana TIME elege o título de “Person of the Year”. Um título que, devido à sua designação literal e a muitos dos seus mais mediáticos vencedores, é visto como um prémio, algo positivo, no entanto, o seu histórico conta-nos muito mais. No artigo deste ano, naquele em que nomeiam Donald Trump pela segunda vez, Sam Jacobs escreve:
“Over time, we’ve seen the Person of the Year franchise shift: from Man of the Year to its current designation; from the period between the world wars, defined by leaders like Mohandas Gandhi and Wallis Simpson, to the first quarter of the 21st century, an era marked by the tremendous changes ushered in by a technological revolution. Although the American presidency has evolved across these eras, its influence has not diminished. Today, we are witnessing a resurgence of populism, a widening mistrust in the institutions that defined the last century, and an eroding faith that liberal values will lead to better lives for most people. Trump is both agent and beneficiary of it all.
For marshaling a comeback of historic proportions, for driving a once-in-a-generation political realignment, for reshaping the American presidency and altering America’s role in the world, Donald Trump is TIME’s 2024 Person of the Year.”
Os jornalistas da TIME referem que, ao longo dos últimos 97 anos, a “Pessoa do Ano” é aquela que, para melhor ou pior, mais influenciou as tendências, notícias e eventos daquele ano. Uma análise detalhada de toda a controvérsia (ou pelo menos fatores que me incomodam) sobre este “prémio” tornaria este texto demasiado extenso, uma vez que era intitulado “Man of the Year” até 1999, ou “Women of the Year”, mas apenas em 3 ocasiões (1936, 1952 e 1986) e até "Man and Wife of the Year" (1937) ou cuja lista de vencedores inclui, por exemplo, Hitler (1938) e Khomeini (1979) e 24 presidentes dos EUA. Falemos então, do presente.
Acusado de uma longa lista de crimes, que variam entre conspiração e abuso sexual e violação, Donald Trump, foi eleito presidente dos Estados Unidos da América pela 2ª vez e TIME’s Person of the Year. Também em 2024, Gisèle Pelicot conseguiu responsabilizar e ver prender 50 dos mais de 80 homens, incluindo o seu marido, que a drogaram e violaram durante 9 anos.
Em 2022, “O Espírito da Ucrânia” foi a última das noções abstratas a ser nomeada “Person of the Year”, pela resiliência e resistência do povo ucraniano face aos horrores que sofreram. Junta-se a uma lista que inclui, por exemplo, as participantes do movimento #MeToo (2017) e “O Protestante” (2011). Não desmerecendo nenhuma dessas atribuições, mas sim seguindo essa lógica, nos últimos 14 meses, morreram 45,192 palestinianos, incluindo 17,492 crianças - não houve menção deste povo nos candidatos ao prémio. Houve, no entanto, de Benjamin Netanyahu.
